Known by different names such as Crawley Green Road Cemetery and St. Mary's Cemetery, the Luton Church Burial Ground carries a rich history that dates back to 1854. The site is managed by an independent charitable trust and not the responsibility of St Mary’s Parish Church, Luton.
A Farm's Transformation
In 1854, this hallowed ground emerged from humble beginnings, situated on farmland in the heart of Luton.
Today, it blankets the vast expanse of St. Anne's Hill, serving as a testament to the passage of time and the changing landscape of our town.
This cemetery began its journey as an extension burial ground for the St. Mary's Parish church, serving as a final resting place for generations of Luton's residents.
A Place of Commemoration
Purchased through the collective contributions of the public, the cemetery stands as a testimony to the community's dedication.
It is lovingly maintained and governed by the Luton Church Burial Ground Trustees, who have been entrusted with its care.
Within its serene confines, the cemetery bears witness to the sacrifices made in times of war. It contains the final resting places of brave souls from both World Wars, a poignant reminder of their service and sacrifice.
Honouring the Fallen
The echoes of World War I resonate in the 83 war burials scattered throughout the cemetery.
In the aftermath of the conflict, a Cross of Sacrifice was raised on an island site along the main path, a solemn tribute to all the servicemen who found their eternal rest here.
The legacy of remembrance extends to World War II, with 50 service burials. Among them, you'll find 1 sailor, 31 soldiers, and 16 airmen from the United Kingdom's forces, along with 2 valiant Home Guard members.
These heroes lie at rest in various corners of the cemetery, their memory preserved through a mix of permanent private memorials and headstones designed by the Commission.
